Residential Settings of Young Adults in Extended Foster Care: A Preliminary Investigation

Authors: Laura Napolitano; Mark E. Courtney

In 2012, youth in foster care in California gained the right to remain in care after age 18 through legislative efforts to extend foster care through age 21. However, this expansion of care includes new requirements for these older youth, including limitations on where they live. This study represents an initial exploration of how these transition-age youth view their living arrangements, including the quality and impact of their residential settings. The analysis outlined in this research can help stakeholders determine how to improve these living situations to maximize the benefits of extended foster care, helping these young adults move toward successful independent living.
